Direct Service Volunteers

Austin Children's Shelter is in dire need of Care Academy Volunteers!

Direct Service Volunteers work directly with the kids either in our cottages, our Care Academy, or our therapeutic classroom at our Strong Start facility.  It's a great way to get engaged and build a rapport with the youth in our care.  Direct Service volunteers are required to attend an Info Session, complete the Volunteer Application, complete a Volunteer Orientation, and go through a background check before they may begin working with the youth.  All Direct Service Volunteers must be at least 21 years old.

Due to a recent DFPS policy change, all Direct Service Volunteers are now required to submit an FBI background check before volunteering.  In order to ensure as much of our funds as possible go to supporting programs for our youth, ACS will no longer be able to pay for these background checks.  Each volunteer must now pay the $41.95 fee.  We apologize for any inconvenience and hope that you will still consider volunteering with the kids and families in our care.

How To Become a Direct Service Volunteer

All Direct Service Volunteer applicants must complete three steps.

Step 1: Attend an Info Session.

Step 2: Complete and submit a Volunteer Application.

Step 3: Attend the Volunteer Orientation.

Volunteer Info Sessions and Orientation

Volunteer Info Sessions are typically scheduled for the second Tuesday of every month from 6:00 - 7:00pm at Austin Children's Shelter.  Please RSVP if you plan to attend an Info Session.

Below are the Volunteer Orientation dates for 2014.  All Orientations are from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm at Austin Children's Shelter.  Please RSVP if you plan to attend the orientation.
