Volunteers are a valuble resource for the Shelter and help in every aspect of the agency. Depending on interest and time availability, volunteers can choose a direct or indirect service postion.  What we offer volunteers in return for their support is the knowledge that you are making a real difference in the lives of the childre we serve.

direct service volunteers
Volunteers commit to at least eight hours per month and have a consistent schedule.  They may volunteer any day of the week, 365 days a year. Volunteers serve as  supplemental resources for the staff and help with some of the following duties:

Direct Care Volunteer
Assist staff in supervising children, ages birth to seventeen. Potential activities are reading, dance, art, outdoor play, homework or feeding infants. Assist the staff with upkeep of the houses and offices by vacuuming, doing laundry or dishes, making beds, and dusting.

Outing Chaperone
Assist the staff and supervise children on field trips to places such as the circus, zoo, library or park.

Kitchen Assistant
Assist the staff by preparing and serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack or dinner. Bake for special occasions like birthdays or holidays.

Pre-School Assistant
Patient, nurturing volunteers needed to work with pre-school age children in the morning hours implementing teacher led, themed activities.  Volunteers will assist children learning basic skills and behavior management and provide positive, fun interactions with children.

Homework Helper
Assist the children during the school year with homework in specific subjects.

Computer Lab Tutor
Our computer lab is a great place to interact with our kids you’ll get to cheer them on as they accomplish great things, comfort them at minor setbacks, and share your knowledge with them as they learn about the world.

Mentor
Mentors train and provide new volunteers with the necessary tools to successfully work in the milieu. Must have a minimum of 1 year ACS Direct Service volunteer experience; be familiar and comfortable with the milieu and with training new volunteers.

art instructor
Teach children how to express themselves through paint, sculpture, music, or theatre arts.

indirect service volunteers
Indirect Service volunteers are volunteers who help with important tasks that do not involve direct interaction with the children. Indirect service volunteers can choose from the following activities:

Guild Member
The ACS Guild is a membership-based volunteer group that provides a variety of support for the Shelter.  For more information, click here.

Volunteer Program Assistant
Assist the director of volunteers with planning, setting up and offering seminars, volunteer fairs, and volunteer and donor recognition parties.

General Office and Computer Assistant
Assist the administrative staff with typing, filing, copying, phone calls and other day to day office duties. Help staff to update databases and the web site.  Answer phones at night and on weekends.

Volunteer Advocates
Express your opinions to decision-makers regarding issues that affect child welfare.

Interpreter
Use your language skills to help us communicate with children who have special needs. Spanish Speakers and American Sign Language users are especially needed.
